Ask anything

  • Marta asked

Was Rachel Fernhout a real woman? What is her story life?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Marta, Rachel Fernhout was an artist and the wife of Edgar Fernhout, who made this painting. She was born in 1905 in the Dutch province of Brabant and died in 1989 in France. Her maiden name was Pellekaan. Edgar, who was the son of painter Charley Toorop (Jan Toorop's daughter) and Rachel were together from 1932 until about 1941. In this period her health became weak and they divorced just after WO II. Rachel made mainly drawings and book illustrations, but also some paintings. She had also studied French and made a living by teaching and translating. There is a wikipedia page about her in Dutch, so if you want to know more details, you could have it translated by ai: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel_Fernhout-Pellekaan I hope this is helpful. Kind regards, Els
