This likeness of the Spanish cellist Casals shows that Toorop could paint a rapid impression as well as Symbolist work. He made it in Amsterdam on 29 December 1904, probably after a recital given at his house. The inscription ‘Prélude de Bach’ undoubtedly refers to the first part of one of Bach’s cello suites. They became part of the standard repertoire after Casals’s famous performances.
