The young man portrayed here holds a book in his left hand with his thumb between the pages. The family coat of arms is that of the Spanish house of Fonseca. One of the members of this family had been Governor General of the Low Countries. The meaning of the letters c and y, linked by a so-called love knot, is unclear.
