This is a fine example of the so-called Luminist style in which Sluijters and other young, Amsterdam-based painters such as Leo Gestel and Piet Mondrian worked between 1907 and 1910. It is a development of the Pointillism of Georges Seurat, but with stronger colours and with a very free, sometimes almost crude, manner of applying dabs of paint. It proved an efficient means of capturing the light and atmosphere of a landscape, as in this sunny view of a sand quarry with dump carts.
