The collector Van Beuningen bought this picture as an original Hieronymus Bosch, but it is too weak when seen in the company of the genuine ones in the museum. Yet there is a moving contrast between the gentle Christ and the evil-minded people forcing Pilate to sentence him to death. Their ugliness makes the condemned man all the more beautiful. Pilate, in oriental garb, has washed his hands in innocence, but he looks unhappy.
