A niche with books, a copper washbasin and jug, a clean white towel: this could be any still life. But the books and washing utensils refer to the pure, pious nature of the Virgin Mary, who is on the back of this small panel. Yet these are also the real roots of later still-life painting, in which objects are depicted for their own intrinsic beauty.
