Ask anything

  • Charpentier Sophie asked

I’m interested in Evaristo Baschenis work, Is it possible to see this painting from Evaristo Baschenis (Still Life with musical instruments books and sculpture) at the Depot, or is the artwork kept in storage? And Gabriel Metsu “woman playing the virginal” ? Thanks for you answering (I’m searching on this kind of musical subject, and would like to come to the Boijmans museum to see those two paintings)

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Sophie, Unfortunately the museum is closed for renovation and both these paintings are in storage in the depot. The Metsu is visible from the atrium through the window and atthe beginning of next year, it probably will be shown in one of the galleries. For the Baschenius you would need to enter the storage room or to have the painting brought to one of the study rooms. When the register approves, this can be arranged, but you will need to pay for the art handling costs. I hope this is helpful, kind regards, Els

A remarkable detail is the dust on the lute on the right, through which a finger appears to have been drawn. It calls to mind a remark about Baschenis' virtuosity in the biography that was written by Francesco Maria Tassi, which says that the viewer is drawn to touch the paintings and to brush away the dust.
