More information

The painting 'Mother with child' belongs to a series of war paintings from 1950/51. Fear, devastation and a choice for the side of the victim are recurring themes. Constant makes impressive use of two children to contrast life and death. The mother's head stands out lonely against the black sky. Social involvement was a characteristic of CoBrA, the movement set up in 1948, of which Constant, together with Appel and Corneille, formed the Dutch nucleus.
