This portrait of a Camaldolese monk is characterised by liveliness and the directness of observation. The young monk looks over his left shoulder with a smile on his lips. This spontaneous facial expression is something Moroni invented himself; the motive returns in various works from his hand. The portrait is very balanced in composition. The muted colours of the face, the clothes and the background are carefully attuned to each other.
