  Dear Michael, In 1936 and 1975 it was suggested that this painting is a fragment of a bigger scene, maybe with Venus and Adonis. But other art historians have countered this idea. They were convinced that it is made as an independent painting (late, Titian was between 80 and 90 years old when he painted it) and that the painting was made just a little bit smaller at the edges, maybe 10-12 centimeters. In 1982, it was suggested that the painting was related to Titian's portrait of a man with a white dog in Kassel, and that it must have been comissioned by the same person. This might have been Gabriele Serbelloni from Milan. Both paintings are connected to Greek-Roman antiquity, the boy in this painting might be Bacchus. Kind regards, Els

  Dear Laura, of course. This painting was acquired with the collection of D.G. Van Beuningen in 1958. The purchase of his collection was so important that the name of the museum then changed to 'Boijmans Van Beuningen'. You can find a lot more information about this online. Best, Lisa
