This bucolic party by Pater is typical of the so-called 'fête galante', a genre that was introduced to French painting by Watteau. These paintings usually show extremely elegantly dressed young people amusing themselves with conversation, music, dance and games in an Arcadian landscape. They are eighteenth-century representations of the rituals of love.
