Starnina made this panel between 1395 and 1406 during a stay in the Spanish port of Valencia. St Anthony’s elegant, elongated body and his slender hands with their long, delicate fingers are characteristic of the International Gothic style. He carries a staff in the form of a Tau cross, the symbol of the Hospital Brothers of St Anthony founded in his name in 1095.
