‘La bataille des couteaux’ was painted by Portuguese painter Vieira da Silva soon after returning to Paris after the Second World War. Vieira da Silva’s abstract paintings often depict impressions of a post-war (urban) environment. Formally trained as a sculptor, she chose to switch to painting early into her career. From a basis of geometric Cubism and a dash of jarring Surrealism, Vieira da Silva developed a highly personal semi-abstract style.
