Ask anything

  • Sophie Raobeharilala asked

    Dear Sir, Madam,

French art historian currently conducting research on a version of this painting, I was wondering if you had any information about the inspiration of this composition : is it typical of a certain artist or movement ?
The version I am working on has potentially be misattributed and I struggle to find anything about it.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Best regards
    Sophie Raobeharilala

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Sophie, Thank you for your question. The composition seems, at least in the foreground, quite faithful to the biblical story. The landscape, however, witnesses a growing interest in our natural surroundings, combined with general ideas about far away countries (mountains), the city of Jeruzalem with its towers (often based on an early print) and its proximity to the sea. The slightly earlier painting of the same subject by Jan van Eyck in the museum collection shows a similar scheme, but is executed with much more eye for (naturalistic) detail: https://www.boijmans.nl/en/collection/artworks/3729/the-three-marys-at-the-tomb. Kind regards, Els
