This Virgin listens shyly to what the angel Gabriel (now missing) is telling her at the Annunciation. The dignity and simplicity of this statue immediately recalls the art of classical Rome. Which is why it used to be attributed to Giovanni Pisano, a son of Nicola Pisano, who sparked off a sculptural revolution in Pisa merely by looking carefully at the classical remains around him.
