Kokoschka could have seen works by Minne at the 1902 Secession exhibition, at the Miethke Gallery in 1905 and again at the 1909 Kunstschau. Some drawings from around 1907-1908 appear to have been inspired by Minne. The simple forms made a profound impression on the young Kokoschka. He said later: ‘Beneath the surface, in the inner selves of these figures of boys, moves something like the tension that dominates the space in the Gothic, indeed, that creates the threedimensional space in the first place.’
