  • Thomas Werner asked

    Hello,
we are planning a visit of the museum. Is it possible the see the work of Barbara Hepworth during the renovation?

Thank you in advance for your response.

    Best, Thomas wWerner

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Thomas, the sculpture has returned from the 2023 exhibition to its place in depot A4.08. As you might know, Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is accessible, but I am not sure if the sculpture is visible from the atrium. We offer free guided tours but one never knows on beforehand which depot will be visited. The best advise I can give is to make use of our new service, art by request. You can find all information here: https://www.boijmans.nl/en/activities/art-by-request. Kind regards, Els

More information

Barbara Hepworth is characterized by her feeling for her material. She had a great love of carving as a technique, because it involved a direct confrontation with natural materials like stone and wood. In 'Marble with Colour' rough planes alternate with polished ones and the gradations of colour in the marble are set off by a pink tone. The sculpture has been given a rough wooden base as a contrast to the structure of the stone. Equally carefully considered is the approach to form. In this work Hepworth, who in the thirties was one of the first abstract artissts in Britain, has sought for a harmony between open and closed space, squares and circles, projecting and recessed planes.
