Barbara Hepworth is characterized by her feeling for her material. She had a great love of carving as a technique, because it involved a direct confrontation with natural materials like stone and wood. In 'Marble with Colour' rough planes alternate with polished ones and the gradations of colour in the marble are set off by a pink tone. The sculpture has been given a rough wooden base as a contrast to the structure of the stone. Equally carefully considered is the approach to form. In this work Hepworth, who in the thirties was one of the first abstract artissts in Britain, has sought for a harmony between open and closed space, squares and circles, projecting and recessed planes.
