The work of Wouter van Troostwijk, another artist who died before his time, is not only very rare but also highly original. He did not imitate the paintings of the Old Masters whom he admired, but looked at nature and tried to do what he thought they had done. Nor did he idealise reality. He simply painted what he saw, and is still convincing today.
