This sculpture composed of limestone elements has the character of a timeless architectural form. Instead of taking over space, it envelops it. A deep shaft and openings at the sides allow of a glimpse of the enclosed inner space. At the same time attention is drawn to the outside, in which narrow grooves and a relief scarcely raised above the surfacegive the stone a subtle articulation. With his highly introverted approach to space and spatiality, Colton has allotted a fundamental role to light. The contrast between internal and external space is expressed in that between diffused, dim light and the brightness of direct light. Depending on the intensity of the light, the soft, porous structure of the white limestone is emphasized, while the subtle nuances of the articulation are also made visible thanks to the light.
