A Chinese ginger jar as sculpture, blown up to monumental proportions. McCollum evinces his scepticism about originality not only by choosing this traditional form, but also by presenting the jar, executed in attractive pastel tints, in large numbers all at the same time in an installation. At a time when art has increasingly acquired the function of a desirable article, he feels that the work of art has no viability any more as a unique expression of the individual. He presents his perfect vehicles as an ironic commentary on the art world. The anonymous timeless form is a closed one, so it preserves the mystery and can thus hold all the desirs and associations of the art consumer.
