The 'Cremaster' is a series of films by the American artist Matthew Barney. 'Cremaster 1' is, chronologically speaking, not the first episode that was made, but it is the first one seen in the Cremaster story. In this abstract and colourful film, filled with majorettes and stewardesses from the 'thirties, the development of the human embryo has pride of place. Each episode in the Cremaster series is accompanied by sculptures, drawings and photographs. Although originally used on the set, they are each autonomous works of art. So, too, is the object seen here.
