The death of the Nemean lion is one of the twelve labours that Hercules according to the mythological story had to undertake. The lion was a monster that was born out of two other creatures, namely Echidna, half woman half monster, and Orthos, a two-headed dog. The lion brought destruction to man and animal. Hercules strangled the beast, after he had shut himself up with it in his lair. The sculpture is designed by Giambologna and executed by one of his most talented pupils, Pietro Tacca.
