Morandi’s still lifes show how closely figurative art can approach the abstract. He repeatedly painted new arrangements of the same cheap pots and bottles with a rigid consistency. He showed how rich and varied such compositions could be and how much there was in this sort of minimalism for the lovers of pure form and colour. For him, simplicity was a source of absolute beauty.
