Polke sometimes mixed materials such as pulverized graphite, iodine and different liquids into the paint. It was hard to predict how these ingredients would react with one another. The chemical processes that determined the colours and shapes often went on working long after the painting was finished. It is this alchemy of colours, and the magic that Polke associates with it, that interests him.
