The famous painter Parmigianino had some of his most successful compositions immortalised as chiaroscuro woodcuts. These include masterpieces such as this 'Diogenes', printed from four blocks by Ugo da Carpi. According to legend, the Greek philosopher lived in a barrel; he is shown here reading in front of it. The plucked chicken on the right refers to Plato's description of mankind as 'a featherless, biped animal'.
