Roos Theuws poses the question of the essence of light in her work. In contrasts between light and dark, cool and warm light, mat and reflecting surfaces, she shows light in its changing forms. In the photograph of a richly embroidered medieval textile light manifests itself as a warm glow bound up with the material. By contrast the photographic registration of a clear light, which shades off via a diffuse border area into deep darkness, presents an immaterial image of light. A similar contrast is also expressed by the direct light, which gleams softly on the polished aluminium, but at the same time casts its shadow on the projecting frame. Roos Theuws is not looking for an unequivocal answer to the anwer to the question of the essence of light. Preserving the mystery of light, she reveals it in the richness of its many manifestations.
