This engraving was based on the drawings of Erasmus that Dürer made during his trip through the Low Countries in 1520. Erasmus is engrossed in asnwering the letter lying on the table before him. As a counterpoint to the books, which allude to Erasmus's immortality as a thinker, the posy of the flowers symbolizes his mortality as a man. Eramus thought the print was very fine, but was less taken with the likeness.
