There is always a great deal to be seen in Lucas van Leyden's prints. In this detailed engraving the main scene is in the background: Christ on the cross, flanked by the two crucified thieves. In the foreground and midground we see all manner of people coming and going, from beggars to richly dressed citizens. They gather in groups discussing the spectacle in the background.
