Mantegna was one of the frst great artists to make prints. The subtlety of the engraving, the powerful modelling and the expressive fgures make this sheet one of the masterpieces of Renaissance printmaking. The relief-style construction of the composition reveals his love of classical sculpture. The subject is ‘classical’ too. Silenus is being crowned in the centre. He was a great wine-lover and permanently drunk.
