This exceptionally fine Bartmann jug was manufactured in the first half of the 16th century in the stoneware potteries of Cologne. The curling beard and the hair under the edge of the jug are very finely reproduced. Such relief decorations were applied to the stoneware object using a pipe clay mould. The belly of this jug is decorated in the same way with flowers and garlands.
