Since 1992, Rineke Dijkstra has been making a series of photos in which she has adolescents pose for her camera without being given any initial instructions. It resulted in an impressive series of portraits of teenagers who feel awkward and expose themselves in a disarmingly vulnerable way.
Rineke Dijkstra made these photographs on the beaches of Belgium, Croatia, America and Poland. She took adolescents out of their group and had them pose often alone - sometimes two or three together - in their swim suits in front of the camera. This photo from the series shows a girl on the beach of Hilton Head Island, a beach for rich Americans. The girl tries to pose like a photo model, but is at the same time visibly unsure of herself.
