The popularity of the 'Fête Galante' genre, with its elegant parties of courting couples, is mainly due to Watteau's influence. Upon his admission to the Académie Royale de Peinture he was conferred the official title of 'Peintre des Fête Galantes' in recognition of his influence. The dancer is standing in the fourth position, appropriate for the start of a minuet, a French Baroque dance. [AE]
