There are more than a thousand drawings by Cézanne in pencil and chalk. He made these purely as study materials. He drew the lefthand figure after the life-size marble sculpture 'Psyche abandonné' by Augustin Pajou (1730-1809) in the Louvre. Next to it the artist has drawn a portrait of himself. The third study depicts Cézanne's son asleep in a chair and viewed from above.
