More information

We know of more than a thousand pencil and chalk drawings by Cézanne. He made them exclusively as study material for his own use and they were not seen by the public until after his death, when his estate came on to the market. He made drawings in black and white until around 1888 and then predominantly pencil drawings to which he added watercolour accents with a brush. Eventually he made studies in watercolours alone, without using a pencil or any other drawing technique.
