Cézanne made more than a thousand pencil and black chalk drawings including landscapes, still lifes and figure drawings. He made these drawings exclusively as studies. Most of his portraits are of people in his circle of family and friends; he did not make commissioned portraits. His wife Hortense and his son Paul were among his favourite models and they appear in several paintings and drawings.
