Degas is best known for his depictions of theatre scenes. He recorded the swift movements and colourful costumes in numerous chalk drawings and pastels. Girls in the ballet studio and in the wings were among his favourite subjects. Around 1880 he began to model in clay. As he said himself ‘modelling is a way of thinking,
just like sketching’.
