This drawing of an ice scene depicts entertainment on ice during the harsh winters of the seventeenth century. Depicted are skaters and figures in ornate sledges pulled by horses. They are on a frozen waterway outside the city. Shown is a motley company of young and old, rich and poor on the ice. For his figures, Hendrick Avercamp paid great attention to their posture, clothing, interactions and actions.
The coloured drawing is a study of life. It probably did not serve as a preliminary study, but rather an example with which Avercamp could vary in his paintings.
