Canaletto and Guardi are the most important of the ‘vedutisti’ - painters of Venetian city views. The location depicted in this drawing cannot be identifed; it is not in the city itself, but on one of the canals on the ‘terraferma’ or mainland in the Veneto region. His work was very popular with English collectors. He even worked in London for a number of years (1746-1755).
