Francesco Guardi was one of the most important of the ‘vedutisti’:painters of recognisable, although not always entirely accurate, city scenes. Many artists made drawings and paintings of this famous view over St Mark’s Square towards the main façade of the cathedral with the campanile (bell tower) on the right because they were popular with collectors. Five large drawings of this composition by Guardi have survived.
