Mischievous putti romping around frequently appear in Italian Renaissance and baroque art as a decorative, humorous or allegorical element, as they do in some works by Guido Reni. This study may have been a design for an image of Sacred and Profane Love, a popular theme at the time. However, Reni’s only known painting of the subject differs very considerably from this drawing.
