On 26 November 1510 Fra Bartolommeo was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the Sala del Gran Consiglio in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The composition and the figures were drawn in monochrome shades before being executed in colours. The painting, which was never completed, is in the Museo di San Marco. A number of preliminary studies for this commission have survived, seven of which are in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. They give a good impression of the artist’s working methods. The composition of the painting of the Sacra Conversazione was worked up symmetrically. The enthroned Madonna, holding the Christ Child, occupies the central plane, with her mother St Anne behind her. Eight saints stand and kneel to their left and right. Two unknown saints also kneel in the foreground. These are studies for the one on the left who looks at the viewer, bringing him into the scene. Fra Bartolommeo repeated variations of the feet and the turned head and shoulder. [text: Albert Elen]
