This first study is unusual for its great spontaneity and many modifications,
showing that Fra Bartolommeo wavered between a horse that rears up and
a horse that leaps forward, and whether he should depict the princess
kneeling on a hill in the background to the right or have her bolting out of
the picture to the left. Although reversed, there are striking similarities with a
similar scene that his friend Raphael painted two to three years earlier
during his stay in Florence.
