Composition Study for 'The Nativity', from the collection of Musée du Louvre, Paris.

The desired framing of the painting is already indicated in this composition study. The landscape is sketchily indicated with slender trees and to the right there is a corner post of the ramshackle wooden stable. The artist ultimately painted this on the left, to counterbalance the two strolling angels on the right. He also modified the main figures, especially the Virgin Mary. The angels at the top of the painting were not yet included.
