Two Studies of a Seated man Holding a Book for God the Father in the 'Padre Eterno', from the collection of Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi, Lucca.
This represents an early phase in the development of the figure of God the Father. The full-length figure to the left was drawn first. The later detail study to the right is reminiscent of Christ in ‘The Last Judgement’ fresco, which Fra Bartolommeo painted a decade earlier. The somewhat prosaic, schoolmasterly figure in the left-hand study differs considerably from God the Father in all his monumental grandeur in the painting.
