On 26 November 1510 Fra Bartolommeo was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the Sala del Gran Consiglio in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The composition and the figures were drawn in monochrome shades before being executed in colours. The painting, which was never completed, is in the Museo di San Marco. A number of preliminary studies for this commission have survived, seven of which are in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. They give a good impression of the artist’s working methods.
