More information

This study of a male figure with hammer and pincers represents Nicodemus,
who stands bottom left in the unfinished painting. Once Jesus had died on
the cross, Nicodemus helped to take down the body by loosening the nails.
Fra Bartolommeo depicts him as tradition prescribes, but adds the detail of
him pointing towards the cross.
