In the years 1515-1516 Fra Bartolommeo painted an altarpiece with the 'Salvator Mundi', a risen Christ standing on a podium (now in the Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti, Florence), with two side panels with prophets (now in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence), which was installed in the Cappella Billi in the church of Santissima Annunziata in Florence. This is the design for the standing Christ with his right arm raised. The outlines of the figure were made much bolder and it was completely squared for transfer on to panel; a grid was drawn over it so that assistants could copy the figure to scale, and the artist then painted it. It is a fine example of the practical function of drawings in the artistic process. [text: Albert Elen]
