This chalk study for Joseph in ‘The Presentation in the Temple’ shows him
standing at a tabletop, bending forward slightly. His left hand is hidden from
view by a fold and rests on the table. At bottom left there is a rougher variant
with the figure in a different pose: the left leg bent and leaning heavily on the
left arm. Yet the artist was still not satisfied and made a new drawing of the
figure.
