Studies for the Donor Ferry Carondelet in the 'Carondelet Madonna', in the Besancon Cathedral.
The figure of the donor Ferry Carondelet is introduced to the Madonna and
Child by John the Baptist, patron saint of the chapel for which the altarpiece
was intended. Donors were usually depicted in profile, in a pose of calm,
ritual piety. Here, however, the donor looks beholders straight in the eye,
inviting them to partake of the vision of the floating Madonna.
