Study for the Kneeling Virgin in 'The Nativity' of the 'Del Pugliese Tabernacle', from the collection of Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence.
The kneeling Virgin in ‘The Nativity’ was prepared in three chalk studies. The Virgin was first drawn alone, inclined toward the right and looking away horizontally. Her hands are placed in front of her breast, but are invisible because of a fold in the cloak. The artist made many corrections to this shaded area. At bottom right Mary’s thighs are visible through the sketchily rendered folds and the open cloak.
